DeMarcus Lawrence’s comments recently regarding the upcoming matchup against the Saints tonight have garnered national attention. The star pass rusher who is nicknamed “Tank” was probably not intending to provoke the league’s best team when he said the following:

It seems as though he was issuing a challenge to the Saints when he said that but it was actually an honest response to certain line of questioning. The problem as is often the case is that his words were taken entirely out of context. D-Law was in fact complementary the Saints and was at that moment explaining what he and his defensive teammates need to do in order to slow down the Saints offense. He was not intending to trash talk his opponent but that is what is being perceived in the national media. Unfortunately perception is far more relevant than intention and whether or not Lawrence meant to call out the Saints offense, that is exactly what he has done.
Now what is done is done and the question that begs answering is “Did DeMarcus Lawrence comments give the New Orleans Saints bulletin board material?” The answer is of course yes. Most coaches, and especially a great coach like Sean Payton, would use those words to motivate his team. The Saints however are not the only team that can use those comments to motivate their team. The Dallas Cowboys defense has an opportunity to rally around their teammate and use those comments as inspiration. D-Law’s words can inspire confidence in the Cowboys defense. They can remind this unit to trust in their ability and preparation in order to challenge arguably the best offense in the entire league.
Actions do speak louder than words but words are also powerful. D-Law presented himself with a unique opportunity. If he is able to back up his words with his play against Drew Brees and the Saints he will have elevated himself legendary status. He will solidify himself as a true leader on the defense. Combine that with his elite level of play and that will earn Lawrence a long term contract worthy of one of the premier defensive players in the NFL.
