Cooper Rush: Should he be the new back-up in Dallas?

Rookie quarterback Cooper Rush has been the talk of the town in Dallas lately. So much so, that Cowboys fans are calling for him to replace Kellen Moore as Dak Prescott’s backup quarterback. Watching him in the preseason, one cannot help but draw comparisons to another undrafted Cowboys QB who was able to rise from obscurity into stardom; Tony Romo.

While Rush has been impressive thus far, I am not ready to crown him as the new back-up QB just yet. Remember that this is the pre-season and the level of competition that he has been facing is nowhere near what he would face in the regular season. Deservedly, he will receive more opportunities in the remaining pre-season games. Perhaps he can further prove himself, but I believe that the desire for him to be promoted has as much to do with his performance, as how badly Kellen Moore has performed the last 2 games.

If Kellen Moore can’t cut it, there are always veterans that can be signed in free agency. There is no need to promote a rookie quarterback to back-up for that reason. Having said that, I hope that the Cowboys give Rush every opportunity to earn that role. He should definitely make the 53 man roster based on what we have seen so far but let’s put the brakes on the back-up QB talk for now.
