No Cowboys Pro Bowlers, No Real Surprise.

DeMarcus Lawrence merits consideration for the Pro Bowl based on his all around game and but he was no sure bet and for the first time in over 30 years there will be no Dallas Cowboys pro bowlers on the roster. *Photo by Joe Glorioso All Pro Reels https://www.flickr.com/photos/joeglo/

1989 was the last year in which no Dallas Cowboys pro bowlers represented the franchise at the annual NFL All Star game. That is not the only parallel between the 2020 Dallas Cowboys and the 1989 team. Both of those seasons were disappointing ones in which a new head coach replaced a long standing one. It also brings the Dallas Cowboys organisation full circle from the time Jerry Jones purchased the team to where he has brought them today.

The Pro Bowl is considered by many a popularity contest thanks to the heavy influence of fan voting. The Dallas Cowboys are America’s team and easily the most popular franchise in the National Football League. That makes it all the more unbelievable that there are zero Dallas Cowboys pro bowlers on the 2020 roster. Are there some players who are deserving? Sure, you can make valid arguments for DeMarcus Lawrence, Amari Cooper, and Dalton Schultz among a few others. Yet, none of those players are sure things either.

In a typical year the Pro Bowl event would take place the week before the Super Bowl as it usually does. In that scenario, simply by virtue of players opting out, injuries, or by participating in the Super Bowl, there would certainly be one or more Dallas Cowboys pro bowlers named to the roster when the dust would settle. This year is different. There will be no Pro Bowl game so the current roster is what it is.

This season has been a devastating one for Dallas Cowboys fans. The team will finish with a losing record and barring a miracle the team will miss the playoffs. Last week, the team was bumped from prime time and replaced with a match up between the Giants and Browns. Now comes the announcement that there will be no Dallas Cowboys pro bowlers on the roster for the first time in 31 years. This has to be embarrassing for an owner who prides himself on keeping America’s Team relevant. Is it likely to resonate with him and bring about change? Not likely.
