Progress Report: Cowboys Offense

Veteran TE Jason Witten continues to be the most consistent performer on the Cowboys offense. photo by © Scott Anderson | Dreamstime.com.LLC

Five games into the season the Cowboys have a record of 2 wins and 3 losses, and are alarmingly 2 ½ games behind the division leading Eagles. The following is a breakdown, by position, of how I have graded their performance up to this point. Let’s begin with the offence, which is the strength of the team. Since the Cowboys do have a losing record, you can expect the grades to reflect that.

QB: B+

I give Dak a strong B+ for his performance thus far. He has been arguably the best player on the team while dealing with a struggling running game. He has progressed nicely following his superb rookie season and the future of the Cowboys looks bright with #4 behind center.

RB: C-

The offensive line has not played up to their usual standards but neither has Ezekiel Elliott. The off the field issues and lingering suspension may be getting to him or perhaps too much partying in the offseason has caused him to lose his edge. He is still the most gifted player on the roster and if his suspension is delayed once more he needs to step up big time.

WR: C+

This is not the strongest position group for the Cowboys so expectations are limited here. Dez Bryant has faced some tough defenses to start the season but he needs to really come through going forward. Opposing teams have found a way to shut down Cole Beasley so Butler and Williams need to show more consistency. I would like to see the Cowboys sprinkle in a little bit more of Ryan Switzer.

TE: A

Jason Witten may be past his prime but he is as reliable as ever. He always does what is required of him whether it be blocking or making a crucial 3rd down catch. Once Rico Gathers returns from IR I would like to see the Cowboys figure out a way to get creative and use his size and athleticism. I hope he does not remain buried in the depth chart due to his deficiencies as a blocker.

OL: C

This is still one of the best offensive lines in the league and therefore they have created a high standard for themselves. It is not as though they are playing terribly but they are definitely not playing up to their potential. Hopefully, the big 3 of Smith, Frederick and Martin can gel with Collins and whoever ends up at Left Guard and re-establish themselves as the class of the league.
