Many had predicted that Dallas Cowboys, cornerback, Trevon Diggs was going to have a breakout season in 2021. I regrettably, was not one of those who foresaw this development. Trevon Diggs was noticeably absent in my list of Dallas Cowboys breakout candidates this year. In my defense, I was under the impression that he had already broken out as a rookie last season. Last year, he was immediately named a full time starter, led the team in interceptions, and although he did suffer through some growing pains, I felt that he was the best cornerback on the roster by seasons end. In my estimation, Trevon Diggs was not going to take a giant leap this season but would continue to gradually grow into a solid NFL cornerback. Well, I have never been more pleased to have been wrong.
Trevon Diggs has not only improved his level of play exponentially from his rookie season, he has played his way into the conversation for the NFL defensive player of the year. His league leading 6 interceptions through just 5 games, has put him on record breaking pace. In fact, he has more interceptions than 27 other NFL teams have accumulated so far this season. The interception numbers are impressive, but it isn’t just the interceptions that are the reason he has elevated his game. Sometimes cornerbacks have high interception totals because they are being targeted often or they happen to be in the right place at the right time. That is not all the case when it comes to Trevon Diggs. He has consistently played well and he is creating opportunities by being aggressive and by being a student of the game. In a recent interview on The Michael Irvin Podcast, Diggs explain some of the things that are contributing to his success on the field. Here is a clip from that interview:
In his interview with Michael Irvin, Trevon discusses his two interception performance against the Carolina Panthers, the back tightness he struggled with in that game, and the release of Jaylon Smith among other things. The entire interview can be heard HERE.
The emergence of Trevon Diggs as a legitimate CB1 has provided a huge boost for the Dallas Cowboys defense and is a major reason why the Cowboys are off to such a great start this season. The news that Trevon Diggs is dealing with an ankle injury and is therefore questionable to play this weekend in New England, has Cowboys fans rightfully concerned. Thus far, the Cowboys have handled a great deal of adversity while missing a slew of defensive starters over the first 5 games of the season. They team will truly have to “dig” deep this week if Diggs is forced to miss this game.
