Potential value picks for late day 2 and day 3.
The Dallas Cowboys 2020 draft will potentially leave them several options available with the 17th overall pick. They could select an edge rusher like K’Lavon Chaisson, a cornerback like C.J Henderson. a safety like Grant Delpit, OR they could even pick a stud defensive tackle, wide receiver, or offensive linemen if they chose to go with the best player available. Even if they ignore positions of dire need early in the draft, they may still be able to get some impact players in the following rounds. Here are some prime value picks for late day 2 and beyond for the Dallas Cowboys 2020 draft.
CB BRYCE HALL, VIRGINIA (Round 3, pick 82)
The Dallas Cowboys have a serious need at corner back and most predict that they will draft one within the first two rounds. If they opt to address other positions in the first two rounds, Bryce Hall would provide excellent value in the 3rd round. Hall is an intelligent and athletic corner with exceptional ball skills. There are concerns over Bryce Hall’s 2019 injury history and his lack of top end speed could allow him to slide the 3rd round where the Dallas Cowboys draft with pick #82. Hall does not likley replace #1 corner Byron Jones but will provide depth to a position group that has Jourdan Lewis and Chidobe Awuzie already on the final year of their contracts.
DT RAEKWAN DAVIS, ALABAMA & DAVON HAMILTON, OHIO ST (Round 3, pick 82)
The Dallas Cowboys beefed up the interior defensive line by adding veterans Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe in free agency but they need to inject some youth into their rotation. NFL GM’s tend to place a premium on interior defensive lineman who possess more pass rush ability which usually means that players that excel against the run such as Davis and Hamilton beicome available deeper into the draft. Either one of these players would provide excellent value in the 3rd round, help solidify the depth of the current squad, and also help build the defensive line for the future.
WR K.J HILL, OHIO STATE (Round 4, pick 123)
The Dallas Cowboys lost slot receiver Randall Cobb in free agency and need a replacement for him. Luckily for them, the 2020 NFL Draft is loaded at the wide receiver position. As a result, it is reasonable to assume that they will be able to find a serviceable option in the later rounds of the draft. In round 4, at pick# 123, a player such as K.J Hill out of Ohio State could be a realistic option. K.J Hill is not the biggest or fastest guy. Nor is he exceptional after the catch but what he can do really well is get open and make difficult catches. He could immediately become a reliable option in the slot and he can replace Jason Witten as Dak Prescott‘s security blanket. In addition to his receiving skills, K.J Hill also has experience returning punts so he can contribute on special teams if required to do so.
DE TREVIS GIPSON, TULSA (Round 5, pick 164)
Trevis Gipson is a bit raw but he proved to be extremely productive as a starter the last two seasons at Tulsa. He has a knack for getting to the quarterback, making plays behind the line of scrimmage, and creating turnovers. Those are skills that NFL teams value and it is a special area of focus for the new Dallas Cowboys coaching staff. If Gipson is still available in the 5th round, it would be a great spot to draft a high upside, developmental prospect, who could blossom into a future NFL star.
TE THADDEUS MOSS, LSU (Round 5, pick 179)
The son of NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss has been a popular mock draft pick to the Dallas Cowboys since the 2019 season concluded. Moss did not inherit the blazing speed that his father possessed but he was a serviceable tight end for the National Champion LSU Tigers as both a blocker and pass catcher. Moss is a proven winner and clutch performer who stepped up for his team during the College Football Playoff. Moss may be available for the Dallas Cowboys in day three thanks in part to a foot injury that may limit his 2020 season. If that is the case, it would be a great opportunity for Jerry Jones to redeem himself by drafting Moss after famously passing on his father in the 1998 NFL draft. That mistake has haunted Jerry Jones to this day and may have been his biggest of many regrets as the owner/GM of the Dallas Cowboys.
The Dallas Cowboys 2020 draft is a pivotal one for new head coach Mike McCarthy. With all the turnover, especially on the defensive side of the ball, it is crucial that the Cowboys are able to get multiple contributors from their rookie class and find value in the later rounds.
